eCube® consists of a food simulant contained in a double-skinned enclosure that mimics food temperature at approximately 10mm beneath the surface. With eCube®, the thermostat regulates the refrigeration temperature based upon food temperature rather than air temperature, thereby maintaining food at the proper temperature. When fitted to the thermostat sensor, which controls the compressor, eCube® significantly reduces the frequency of the refrigeration cycles which are now based on food temperature rather than fluctuating air temperature. By using eCube® as a cycle control mechanism, refrigeration cycles last longer but can be reduced by as much as 85%. For example, a Dairy Case cycles 3 minutes on, 2 minutes off = 12 cycles per hour. With eCube®, the cycles change to 8 minutes on, 7 minutes off = 4 cycles per hour; a 66.7% reduction in starts. As the start-up of a refrigerator compressor uses 3 times more power (i.e. start-up 12 amps, run 4 amps) considerable energy savings are achieved. In addition, the more efficient refrigeration cycle leads to a more efficient unit, which then leads to a colder storage area. Consequently, by re-adjusting the thermostat back to its normal temperature settings, there are further substantial energy savings, without compromising food safety and quality.

Yesterday was great, we went to our first project team meet with a client that came to our first Solar projects meet at the Sandy Park to discuss his needs.
There was a part of the attraction that was in sun all day and was an area people gathered to watch their kids and get an ice cream. So we are going to price out a solar veranda with about 50 panels on top to generate 10KW.
Richard Slack from Devon Maintenance Plus is doing the structural work and Alex McGrath of Alpha Vae the solar works and together they hope to come up with a construction paying back between 5-7 years.
Kevin the owner of the centre is also keen to install the very first (at least we think) electric car charging point at a tourist attraction in the South West for his clients. We are looking at putting two points in to encourage greener travel and offset the energy with the solar install.
Love this sort of project and great to work with such forward looking people. We hope to interest many other businesses through this work and really help protect against the future fuel issues!

3) Deal with complaints properly and fully.
4) Run at a profit, make sure you do not discount rooms too much.

UK CAR dealers could make substantial savings through implementing energy efficiency behaviour and technologies, according to the UK’s Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
New research into dealer energy efficiency revealed that the average car dealership could save as much as £10,000 a year by cutting its energy use.
The findings, published in the ‘Dealer Energy Efficiency Guide’, written by an independent energy efficiency expert on behalf of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) in conjunction with the Retail Motor Industry (RMI) and the UK’s Carbon Trust, shows how dealers can become more energy efficient, thereby saving money and improving environmental performance.
The energy saving consultant visited 30 dealers to identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency across the sector. The dealerships, representing all major car manufacturers in the UK marketplace, were of various sizes and types with differing energy spends and occupying buildings of different ages in order to be representative of the industry as a whole.
“Reducing energy costs will help dealerships sustain their businesses and improve the motor industry’s carbon footprint,” said SMMT Chief Executive, Paul Everitt, “Our study shows some great work is being done, and highlights that more than £4,000 of savings are possible without spending a penny. Using the seven step action plan, outlined in the ‘Dealer Energy Efficiency Guide’, we will be working closely with retailers to encourage them to take action now and cut energy use for immediate energy bill savings.”
Chief Executive of the Carbon Trust, Tom Delay, said: “All businesses can save significant amounts of money by cutting down on wasted energy. Car dealerships are no exception. We’re pleased to see the SMMT showing leadership by highlighting this opportunity to its members and we have been pleased to partner with them on providing dealers with practical guidance on how to make savings.”
Director, RMI National Franchise Dealer Association (NFDA), Sue Robinson, said, “The findings of the report highlight the opportunities for dealers and provide tremendous scope by benefitting the environment and the dealer business.
“Many of the recommendations in the report have no or very little cost, other than making someone responsible at the dealership for overseeing expenditure on energy. Today’s dealers put a lot of resources into stock control and energy usage should be no different.
“Reducing the carbon footprint is a good enough reason for reducing energy costs, but saving expenses that go straight to the bottom line will be every bit as important to today’s dealers. Remember, every pound saved is an extra pound on the bottom line and a positive step for a greener environment.”
Based on the number of dealerships in the UK, up to £50 million worth of savings could be made across the automotive retail network per year, equating to a reduction of 300,000 tonnes of CO2.

Theatre Stages With Old Lighting, Be Brave Or Die!

Dramatic, in true thespian tradition but some Theatre's and Halls etc will be paying for highly costly and inefficient light bulbs frozen by the fear of the cost to install say new LED modern lamps that could reduce the electric bill by between 50 and 90%. Businesses Missing out on Green Economy

THE UK’s Carbon Trust is warning that companies in the countries south west region are missing out on the opportunities from the green economy.

At the launch of the Trust’s Green Growth campaign they highlighted that the green economy will grow by 25 percent over the next four years to £112 billion, but less than one in three businesses in the UK’s south west region are developing sustainable or green products and services.

The Trust stated that over 75 percent of the region’s firms recognise that a ‘Green’ reputation does enhance and promote an organisation, 65 percent do not have a yearly plan on reduction of carbon emissions.
Evermore clients and customers are turning to the sustainable and greener companies for supply and services, with many public sector organisations requiring businesses be “green” and working towards a reduced carbon footprint.
The Carbon Trust wants the UK Government to remove unnecessary regulations, that are proving to be a barrier to greening businesses, and provide incentives to boost sustainability and green projects.
Stephen Wyatt, research and development manager at the Carbon Trust stated: “The recent quarterly GDP figures will spark new questions on where growth will come from. In my view, green growth is the only show in town.”
The Trust’s Green Growth campaign will help businesses in the south west region to develop strategies to exploit the green economy.
The campaign also puts pressure on the Government and its Chancellor George Osborne, to deliver a Budget to stimulate the green economy.

The amount of time it takes to pay back the money invested in an energy saving product is sometimes the ONLY clincher in the deal. Although everybody knows that by spending money on such items will save them money at some point there is a cut off balance between future pain and cost.

A report released yesterday by Carbon Trust Advisory, the business arm of the UK government sponsored Carbon Trust, revealed the findings of their study of over 1,000 company’s energy efficiency investments over three years and a survey of finance directors.

The report found that finance directors typically estimate the average rate of return from energy efficiency projects to be less than 20 per cent, when in fact it is closer to 48 per cent.

This is four times the minimum level required by senior finance officers, with the average three year payback on energy efficiency measures also meeting the needs of eight out of ten finance directors, the report revealed.

A large UK firm could save an average 15 percent on its annual energy bill just through lighting and heating upgrades and staff training, said the report.

Hugh Jones, managing director of Carbon Trust Advisory said, "The business case for energy efficiency is clear and compelling. Few other investments get anywhere near that rate of return.

"Yet our data suggests big businesses are leaving around half the investment opportunities on the table and continuing to waste billions of pounds on unnecessary energy use every year."

Energy efficiency is still regarded as a low priority in many organisations, despite the much publicised and proven potential to boost a company's profitability.

To further drive business towards energy efficiency The Guardian spoke to Sandra Rapacioli, research and development specialist at the UK’s Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), who told the newspaper that financial departments should play a bigger role in promoting and implementing green targets.

"Organisations around the world must wake up to the fact that sustainable business makes good business sense and that accountants are critical when it comes to driving such projects forwards," she said.

"With their considerable skill-sets, accountants are able to apply the necessary financial and commercial rigour to develop clear and measurable carbon reduction goals, facilitate effective implementation and provide credible business reporting."

Despite the report below regards the amount energy efficiency is costing UK business, I see this as an opportunity for business to realise. It is definitely not for want of awareness or wish but more of knowing what to do to make a real difference that you can afford in a certain time i.e. payback.

Poor Energy Efficiency Costs UK Businesses

ACCORDING to the UK’s Environment Agency’s annual Greener Business Report poor energy efficiency is costing UK businesses over £6 billion a year.

Notwithstanding this detail, the Environment Agency report that the UK’s industrial sector is showing an improvement in its environmental performance.

Over 50 percent of UK industrial sites monitored by the Agency achieved their highest ‘A’ rating for environmental performance and management, with nearly nine out of ten falling into the top two bands.

The energy sector remains the largest single source of emissions, totalling 75 percent of greenhouse gases, 82 percent of nitrogen oxides and 75 percent of sulphur oxides, but these have been significantly reduced over the last 10 years.

This morning I went to a potential client who had four terraced properties that provided over 100 Hotel bedrooms and restaurant facilities, but they had 4 electricity meters spending in excess of £50,000.

Talking to a colleague this week, his summation on the Eniscope energy mapping monitor that we distribute from Enigin PLC was that it was the Rolls Royce of similar products in function, display and capability. I was pleased with this as such an important and costly matter only deserves the very finest attention and anything less capable would surely equate to less awareness and carbon finance savings.
Incidentally we have deduced from our most recent work that suspects spending over £25,000 per annum on electricity take very little time to see that the Ensicope is the only serious product to identify efficiency gains that they have time to use, i.e. real time data in your face.

Low energy smart strip lighting manufacturer

Whilst visiting a business show this week I came across a fantastic manufacturer of low energy office and works lighting products. The company are based on the south coast and they make T5 strips etc that have in built sensors and sunlight harvesters. In addition they had a wireless remote dimmer switch you can place a long way from the light source to reduce lux.
I guess if we visit a client and they have old light systems that are inefficient regards control it will prove of great use to be able to cost a pay back on a complete new energy smart system as these lights and other systems we currently have together could reduce lighting costs by 70% in many cases.

Can we save energy without seeing clearly?

During a visit to a business last week, I shared with them the energy maps program and how it traced second by second the energy use and trends. They understood that the ability to see every second of your use even when you were not in residence would be essential to understanding where the savings can be made.
They grasped that the savings could be between 10-20% just by seeing and changing habits, nearly £10-20,000 in their situation.The only problem was that they felt that they could do it all manually and in house.
Now, clearly I failed to help them see that if you equate the man hours to monitor, train and check energy on a second by second basis to compete with an Eniscope unit it would cost around £10-20,000 in staff salary's and time including HMRC costs, roughly the same as what they would save! With Ensicope they would get a return on investment of about 80% upwards per annum.
I need to go back to training school, I HAVE FAILED THEM!

FA Floodlight rules out of line with Energy effeciency

At present the English football league demand a given level of lux for the stadium lights of football league clubs. This is because it is very important to them how it looks on television.
That level is set to increase by up to 50% very shortly as they are ever focused on their product and how it shows on the box.
Current levels of power drawn by 50 plus flood lights of your average ground cost a club a large proportion of their electricity bill. These bills are set to rise sharply in the next ten years. The only way the clubs can control costs is to be efficient, however if the football league demand that the lux level has to rise they have no option if they wish to pass to play than raise the brightness and therefore there energy costs indefinitely.
Manchester United have lux levels in excess of 1000 and of course being one of the richest clubs in the world can afford any demand on this as they sell their games for more and more year on year. A club below mid table championship level probably struggles to balance the books and has no option but to meet and pay any energy demands.
Energy costs & supply issues will one day meet survival and logic issues at the FA board room and they will have no option but to have a lux policy in line with sustainability. We are starting to work on this matter by looking at the way football stadiums use energy and trying to negate waste and make them energy smart so it helps with matters such as these.
Incidentally this demand is only for live games and a club may only get a handful of live games a season if they are lucky....maybe we need a floodlight dimmer switch approach!

THE world famous Empire State Building, a New York City skyline landmark is undergoing a major energy efficiency retrofit that will bring 40% reduction in costs and energy use.The Malkin family have been part owners of the building since 1961 and they now supervise the current building managers W&H Properties. President of Malkin holdings Anthony Malkin explained that in New York City "80% of the energy consumed is consumed by buildings. 20% of the buildings consume 80% of that energy.""We're doing this [making the Empire State greener] not because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes business sense. If we don't reduce our energy consumption, we will lose money and be less competitive against China, India, Brazil and the other expanding economies," Malkin told the Guardian newspaper.Enigin Distributor's realise the value of energy saving and efficiency to the future prosperity of their clients, explaining that it makes sound business sense to manage energy use.The Empire State Building constructed in 1931, 1472 feet tall, with 2.8 million square feet of office space consumes the energy equivalent to 40,000 single-family homes.At a meeting of the US Congress Joint Economic Committee (JEC) on Tuesday Malkin reported on the Empire State Building retrofit plans, due to be finished this year, revealing that the cost will be recouped within three years and produce substantial energy and financial savings.The Empire State Building retrofit covers many measures and strategies to save energy and is costing $13 million. By 2013 the Empire State Building’s energy use will have reduced by 40%, meaning that their annual energy saving of £4,4 million will have paid for the retrofits.US Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney is the Chair of the JEC and in a piece she wrote for Huffington Post added three reasons that such measures should be taken:1. Energy efficiency does not have to just be a decision to save the planet, it is also makes good business sense. Business owners can save an enormous amount of money in energy costs by retrofitting.2. If we want to make real progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, we must concentrate on the biggest energy consumers and that is big buildings that exist today.3. Education, Education, Education!

Who said that?

We have identified from research that schools, colleges and uni' s are one of the key areas that would be most receptive to changes in culture and energy use.

When we work with them we would hope to save a good amount just by educating the staff and students how to value the use of light, heat, motors and many other items.

Once we have sorted the culture we can then make things happen without them thinking or have to be responsible for managing something. Then we look at what we can replace that uses fossil fueled power with something that is either more efficient or uses renewable energy.

Then once they've done that they can relax and boast to all their friends how green they are! (not really, only joking ;) )

Start thinking now about winter energy costs

In the midst of all this warm weather it is easy to forget the cold dark days we suffer for half the year and the surge in energy this period causes. On average from inception to making a final decision to install of an energy saving product we guess it takes 3-6 months. This will take us well into winter, so there is no time like the present to start planning that step.
